Short Track Races This Weekend (4/21-4/23)

Although many series have already been in action, this weekend feels like a “Grand Opening” for the 2017 race season.  Series all across the country will be in action on the asphalt and the dirt.  No matter your taste in racing, there is something for everyone.

Here are some of the races we found coming up this weekend!  Click on the series logo in the gallery for more information on what’s happening in the series.

Saturday – Wayne County Speedway (Orrville, OH)
-Spencer Bayston won last Saturday’s Arctic Cat ASCoC stop at Atomic.  Another Top Five finish in that event helped Chad Kemenah pad his point lead.  He has an 80-point advantage over Caleb Armstrong. American Canadian Tour

Sunday – Lee (NH) USA Speedway
- The 2017 American Canadian Tour season begins Sunday at Lee USA Speedway with the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 that was originally scheduled for April 9.  Scott Payea won the event last season.  Nick Sweet is the defending series Champion. Big8 Late Model Series

Sunday – Rockford (IL) Speedway
-Rockford Speedway’s Spring Classic turns 40 on Sunday with the Big8 Series as the headliner.  Michael Bilderback dominated the series in 2016 and will look to take his third straight season title.  Big8 will be joined by the traveling Mid-American Stock Car Series, which is now under the ownership of Greg Oliver Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series

Saturday – Atomic Speedway (Chillicothe, OH)
- The Buckeye Sprints begin their 2017 season at Atomic Speedway.  Shawn Westerfeld is the defending series Champion. Championship Racing Association

Saturday – Toledo (OH) Speedway
-The CRA Super Series is back in action – this time with points on the line.  After two events in conjunction with other series, CRA hosts its opening event at Toledo.  Current NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie Cody Coughlin won the Championship last season. Empire Super Sprints

Friday – Outlaw Speedway (Dundee, NY)
Sunday – Utica-Rome Speedway (Vernon, NY)
-Jason Shultz (no, not our fine freelance photographer) struck first in the 2017 season with a win at Selinsgrove Speedway on April 8.  Friday’s race at Outlaw will be the first points event for Empire.  Sunday’s race will not award series points. www.gssraces.com
Saturday – The Thaw
-It will be the second major Super Late Model race of the season in the state of Wisconsin as teams head to the central part of the state for The Thaw.  Golden Sands opens under the new ownership of Cody Smiley. IMCA

Saturday – Flomaton Speedway (Flomaton, Alabama) (Bay Area Modifieds)
Saturday – Sumter Speedway (Sumter, South Carolina) (Carolina RaceSaver Sprints)
Saturday – Fonda Speedway (Fonda, New York) (CSRA RaceSaver Sprints)
Sunday – Dubuque Speedway (Dubuque, Iowa) (Deery Bros. Late Models)
-Both the Carolina and CSRA RaceSaver Sprints will compete in their first event of the season.  It’s the second stop for the Bay Area Modifieds with Greg Hopkins leading defending Champion Jason Barnhill by one point.  Tyler Bruening holds an eight-point edge at the top of the standings in the Deery Bros. Late Models. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

Saturday – Hagerstown (MD) Speedway
Sunday – Port Royal (PA) Speedway
-Thursday night’s stop at Atomic Speedway belonged to Darrell Lanigan.  The stars of Lucas have a grueling weekend with three stops in three states ahead of them.  Scott Bloomquist holds a 120-point lead over Josh Richards Midwest Street Stock Championship

Friday – Lincoln (IL) Speedway
-The newly formed Midwest Street Stock Championship holds its inaugural event.  The series is unified under UMP Street Stock rules. NASCAR K&N Pro Series East

Saturday – Bristol Motor Speedway (K&N East)
-Ronnie Bassett Jr. and Kyle Benjamin have split wins so far this season in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East action. Although this is an East Series event, plenty of invaders from the West are entered, including point leader Todd Gilliland. NYPA Midget Series

Saturday – Lancaster (NY) Speedway
-The NYPA Midget Association sanctions three-quarter midget racing in western New York and Pennsylvania.  Lancaster is the first of nearly 20 events this season for the group. POWRi

Saturday – Federated Auto Parts I-55 Raceway (Peverly, MO)
Saturday – Valley Speedway (Grain Valley, MO) (WAR Sprints)
-A sour forecast canceled Friday’s scheduled event at Belle-Claire for the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series.  They will make the journey to I-55 for Saturday’s event, which will be the third of the season.  The WAR Sprints will be in action on Saturday on the other side of the Show Me State. Sunday – Oxford (ME) Plains Speedway
-For the first time this season the PASS North Super Late Models prepare to shine.  The group was in action with the National series on April 8 during the Thompson Ice Breaker.  Eddie MacDonald won that event.  The event was scheduled for Saturday, but was moved to Sunday afternoon due to weather concerns. USAC

Friday – Plymouth (IN) Speedway (Sprints)
Saturday – Montpelier (IN) Motor Speedway (Sprints) 
-The wingless warriors take two in Indiana this weekend.  Justing Grant and Chad Boespflug are beginning to separate themselves from the pack at the top of the standings.  Both drivers have one win on the season. Chris Windom has two wins, but sits 37 points behind Boespflug, Third in points. World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series

Saturday – Federated Auto Parts I-55 Speedway (Peverly, MO)
-It’s a relatively quiet weekend with just one stop for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.  With the event at Riverside Int’l moved to May 3, the teams can focus on Saturday’s stop at I-55.  Jason Johnson and Brad Sweet were victorious in the last two events at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last weekend.
