Oregon, WI- Short track legend Joe Shear certainly would be smiling if he witnessed Sunday’s ARCA Midwest Tour race in his honor at Madison International Speedway. In a race that had the perfect mix of strategy, suspense, and side-by-side racing, Andrew Morrissey came out on top.
It was Morrissey’s second Joe Shear Classic win after making a pass on former winner Travis Sauter with 16 laps remaining. Fellow former winners Dan Fredrickson and Ty Majeski tried to chase down Morrissey, but came up short in the final ten laps.
Morrissey and his team played strategy to perfection in the “controlled pit stop” formatted race. Drivers had several opportunities under cautions to enter the pit area, add fuel, and make adjustments without losing a lap or position relative to the other cars that were pitting.
They also had the option of adding two new tires on any one of the stops. Morrissey gained track position early and changed his tires around the midway point. When others pitted for tires in the second half of the race, Morrissey was able to stay on track toward the front.
Behind Fredrickson and Majeski, Sauter and Rich Bickle rounded out the Top Five. Earlier in the day Kevin Knuese won the Midwest Truck Series feature. Bill Prietzel bested the field in the Mid-American Stock Car Series event.
