The stands at East Bay Raceway Park were packed as fans, family and friends gathered to honor local racer Rusty Dixon. Rusty passed away on April 29, 2007 in a motorcycle accident. The Rusty Dixon Memorial Open-Wheel Modified 50 Presented by RCP America was held 10 years to the day of Rusty’s tragic accident.
To honor his memory, the Dixon Family coordinated a 50-lap race and with the help of family, friends and local sponsors, they raised enough money to pay the winner of the race $5,000 to win with a total purse of $17,000. Four heat races were needed to determine the 24-car feature race as 35 cars signed in. During the pace laps of the feature race, Rusty’s son, Alex, lead the field driving a Late Model lettered like Rusty’s Late Model bearing his race number 97. Rusty’s niece Taylor was in the flag stand ready to give the field the green flag.
Austin Sanders started on the pole and kept the lead until just before the half way mark when Doug Horton took the lead. Kyle Bronson, Doug Horton, Steve Miller and Austin Sanders battled for the lead throughout the race. Austin Sanders got back up front and kept the lead to take the win. Kyle Bronson finished a hard fought second place and Steve Miller finished third.
The Mini Sprint feature was won by Robbie Hoffman. The Sprint Car feature was won by Justin Webster. Hobby Stocks feature was won by Brian Morgan and the V8 Warriors feature was won by Rhett Wilson
