For the past 53 years the So-Cal rodding scene is treated to one of the longest running, eagerly anticipated, and well-supported rodding events in the country. In fact, it’s very common to run into your rodding buddies from other states, from across the country, and international rodders from hot rodding strongholds such as England and Australia attend this once a year get-together.
Held at the Pomona Fairplex, since about 1980, the two-day event (Friday and Saturday) brings loads of swappers, hundreds of other types of hot rods gathered into the preferred parking area, and, of course, nearly 1,000 roadsters. And as has bene the case for the past half dozen years or so Building 4 (the main hall from the Grand National Roadster Show) is packing with display roadsters as well as numerous exhibitors displaying product from every facet of our hobby.
But, there is something a bit different this year. In the past the LA Roadster club itself members and all would be handling all the chores, and we do mean all. The club now sees the wisdom of enjoying the weekend themselves have turned over the management of the show to John Buck best known for the production and presentation of the Grand National Roadster Show and the Sacramento Autorama. While the show is everything you have come to enjoy about Father’s Day if you look closely you will see a bit of rearrangement and from what we have experienced so far things do appear to be running more smoothly…especially the swap meet area.
As you can imagine the swap meet section is always, and has always, been a big draw for the LA Roadsters Father’s Day event. No different today as it was decades ago but we did experience a smoother entry, organization of the actual swap spaces and a much calmer “attitude” in the Fairplex parking lot. That is a good thing for annually the climes at the Pomona Fairplex do tend to run a bit warm…in the 90s but rodders prevail and use their imagination to stay cool and enjoy. There are bargains to be had one just has to “endeavor to persevere”.
Sit back and thumb throw the early photos of the swap meet and see what parts you just can’t live without or even complete cars…someone’s future project to bring back to the show in years to come.
