Detroit’s Hot Rod History
In 1952, a group of car clubs from the Detroit area formed the Michigan Hot Rod Association. The MHRA wanted to build a dragstrip for local rodders, so in 1953 it hosted a car show to raise funds. In 2017, the Detroit Autorama celebrated its 65th year—and is still hosted by the MHRA.
Bob Larivee Sr., a Detroit native and a lifetime hot rodder, helped establish the MHRA, and worked and raced at its strip, Motor City Speedway. He later became a car show promoter, founding the International Show Car Association (ISCA) and Larivee’s Promotions, which presented the Detroit Autorama for many years.
Hot Rod Detroit Pictorial is Larivee’s latest book and covers the hot rod scene in Detroit from the ’50s to 2016. Its 368 pages are filled with close to 2,000 photos—from show cars at the Autorama and other shows to early drag cars. All winners of the Detroit Autorama’s Don Ridler award and Great 8 awards are included.
