Get Your Degree in CNC

Lots of people love to complain that nobody makes anything in the United States anymore. That’s not true. Yes, lots of manufacturing jobs have gone offshore where unskilled labor is cheaper, but there are still plenty of companies here in the States making great products and are desperately looking for skilled tradesmen and women. Best of all, these jobs often pay quite well.

If you are the kind that loves to work with your hands and can’t stand the thought of being stuck behind a desk all day, this may be great news for you. Universal Technical Institute’s NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, NC, has developed a new training program specifically for CNC Machining Technology.

Qualified CNC machinists are in more demand than ever before and part of the genesis of this program came from nearby NASCAR race teams being unable to find enough skilled candidates to fit their needs. In fact, the program is co-sponsored by Roush Yates Engines.

What we like about this program is students will spend a significant amount of class time learning manual machining skills before they are allowed to move on to one of several CNC machining centers the school has invested in. The instructors are all also professional machinists who actually did this stuff in the real world.

Students will spend 32 weeks at the NASCAR Technical Institute campus in Mooresville, NC, to complete the program. Unlike other programs at NASCAR Tech, the CNC school is separate. In other words, if you have no interest in an automotive career, there are no racing or general automotive courses that are prerequisites before beginning your CNC classes. Tuition will be—take a deep breath—seventeen grand, but for that you get significant hands-on time with all types of both manual and CNC machining equipment. Plus, if you are looking to get a leg up on a job in the racing industry, there’s no better place for you than in the middle of NASCAR country.

If this sounds like something you might want to try out, you can hit up Universal Technical Institute’s website at www.UTI.edu or call the NASCAR Tech campus directly at (866) 316-2722.

After all, being able to spend your days carving cool stuff out of hunks of metal sounds a lot better than anything you can do with a Philosophy degree anyway!

Doug Yates of Roush Yates Engines spoke of how his company specifically is always looking for qualified CNC operators at NASCAR Tech’s grand opening for the CNC Machining Technology school located in the new (you guessed it) Roush Yates CNC Technology Lab.
Longtime race fans will recognize racing legend Bobby Allison, who was on hand for the festivities.
We like that graduates of this program won’t just be CNC keyboard jockeys. Students will spend a significant amount of time on the school’s manual machining equipment developing a good foundation as a machinist.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Roush Yates CNC Technology Lab included NASCAR’s Brett Bodine (second from left), Doug Yates (center) and Mooresville mayor Miles Atkins (far right).
The school has invested in several fully stocked CNC machining centers so that all students will get plenty of hands-on time.
If students are interested, they can also take advantage of the school’s other classes on engine building, fabrication, welding and others.
