Can I Use My Welding Helmet to View the Solar Eclipse?

According to NASA, you need a set of approved “eclipse glasses” to view a solar eclipse outside of the totality, or the few minutes where the moon has completely blocked the sun. Eclipse glasses need to be compliant with ISO 123-12 and must be purchased from an authorized manufacturer. That is the correct, safe way to view the eclipse. If your welding helmet has a Shade 12 or higher filter, NASA suggests it is safe for limited viewing of the eclipse. During viewing, a Shade 13 is the sweets spot, as the Shade 14 will be too dark and the Shade 12 might be uncomfortable. Check your gear , listen to NASA, and don’t look at the sun without proper eye protection.
