For generations it has been a tradition on the Gulf Coast for the fishing fleets to have their boats “blessed” before they head out to sea. About five years ago the good folks of Diamondhead, Mississippi, and the Cruisin’ the Coast organization thought it would be fun to have a “Blessing of the Classics” event in the beautiful town of Diamondhead. The Road Tourians had been invited to lead the parade as it wound its way through the community. The well-manicured front lawns of the homes were filled with residents who wished us well and there were plenty of parties happening as we drove by. When we reached the area of the actual blessing we were greeted by a priest and offered a blessing for safe travels. We all received a certificate to attest to the fact that we had been a part of the “Blessing of the Classics.” The parade ended in a local shopping area and we spent some time with our vehicles on display and listening to some great music. It was a “Blessed” day in Diamondhead.
Thursday morning continued with plenty of choices of activities for the Road Tourians. Many folks headed to the swap meet and manufacturers midway at the Coliseum in Gulfport. This huge event was well coordinated by former ISCA President Bob Millard and his team and included a huge display of new street rod products and plenty of items for the ladies to choose from. The Vicari Auto Auction was also taking place at the Coliseum.
Also on Thursday, the new “Burn ’em Up in the Pass” tire burnout contest brought folks to Pass Christian. Thursday morning also marked the beginning of the registration for the 2018 Cruisin’ the Coast event. People lined up to make sure they got registered for next year’s event. By Thursday afternoon the 40-mile stretch of beachfront on Route 90 was wall-to-wall with cruising classic cars.
