The historic home of the All American 400 is not facing any imminent threat

A viral social media post that began circulating Wednesday morning had race fans and supporters of Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville nervous and up in arms.  A proposed Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise and new soccer facility at the Fairgounds had some believe that it would spell the end of the race track.

That’s not the case, according to FSN promoter Tony Formosa.

“Nashville, Tennessee is in the running for a Major League Soccer team,” Formosa said.  “There are a couple billionaires.  They’ve gotten together with some city officials and they proposed Major League Soccer on the grounds.

“There is actually no danger of this interfering with the Speedway.  This actually started back in January or February.  We asked the mayor would the soccer field be put in the footprints of the Speedway and she said absolutely not,” he continued.

Formosa said there are still some steps that need to be taken before the team is actually awarded to the city.  If it does happen, he’s not at all opposed.

“It could give us the chance to bring customer awareness and promote racing with the soccer people,” he said.

Furthermore, Formosa has just signed an agreement to lease the facility for the next ten years.  “I feel like there is no danger of this Speedway going away in the next ten years,” he said. “If this deal does pass, so be it.  We’re just going to have a soccer stadium at the Fairgrounds, which may not be a bad thing.”

Formosa is confident the Speedway will remain running through those ten years no matter what that plan may be.  He cited a movement that saved the Speedway in 2010 after there were potential plans to demolish it and the grandstand.

“Some people may think it’s a scam and they might kick us out anyway.  I can tell you with the lease I have here at the Speedway…if I go down, I’m going to go down swinging.  I don’t see it happening.  The mayor has been very loyal to me and she’s said publicly the Speedway will remain here.”
