The Countdown to the Championship came down the home stretch during the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals held at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, October 12-15, 2017, with Chevys finishing high up in the mix.
In the Funny Car ranks, it was Robert Hight, driving the John Force Racing AAA 2017 Chevy Camaro-bodied flopper, taking out NHRA reigning world champion and current points leader Ron Capps in the final round.
Defending Pro Stock champion Jason Line stayed in the championship hunt driving his Summit Racing 2017 Camaro to victory by taking out fellow Camaro driver Drew Skillman in that final round.
Slate Cummings snagged the Wally in Super Stock eliminator wheeling his Moser Engineering-sponsored 2005 Chevy Cavalier, while another Chevy highlight was Chuck Parker taking the win in the Redemption series exhibition eliminator driving his nitrous-fed 1955 Chevy dubbed Jolene. The Redemption series exhibition class (eighth-mile) features a wide variety of no-prep-style cars, which ran during Friday qualifying. In the opening round, Parker put a holeshot win on Street Outlaws star James “Doc” Love II and his nitrous-assisted Monte Carlo. Parker then proceeded to take down Kayla Morton and her ProCharger supercharged Mustang in the semifinals. From there, Parker took the podium when Frankie “Mad Man” Taylor’s supercharged Firebird broke off the line in the final round.
With the success and interest in the Redemption class, we can only hope to see more of these Outlaw-style racers at more NHRA events in 2018.
With just two races to go (Las Vegas and Pomona), the excitement is mounting to see who will be crowned champions for the 2017 NHRA drag racing season.
