Miles Fierro’s Garage in Wyoming

Lots of enthusiasts have their own garage built off of their house, but then there are folks who need their own dedicated space. Miles Fierro is one of those guys who had the room to grow and decided an 800–square-foot, standalone building was the way to go. As it turns out, that’s good, because Miles builds a lot of stuff.

Our first question involved the big table in the middle of the room. It is a BurnTables CNC plasma-cutting machine that Miles uses to make all sorts of cool auto-related gizmos. He also has an oldie-but-goodie 1952 sheetmetal brake, which helps him shape metal into whatever he wants. On the side, Miles builds custom TIG-welded fuel tanks for restored street rods, so his work has to be top notch.

While his fabricating work generally revolves around high-end builds, his hobby is drag racing. He owns a 1999 Mustang that’s in the process of being rebuilt after the old engine went kaboom; a nitrous-huffing LS swap is currently underway. If an LS Mustang is a little too ordinary for you, then shoved in the corner is his good buddy Mike Haller’s 1985 C10, which is also powered by an LS but with an 74mm Garrett turbo for induction.

The lightweight drag truck actually has a magazine history, as the previous owner ran 9s at Hot Rod Drag Week a few years ago. The pickup has been extensively lightened and has a leaf-spring suspension with CalTracs traction bars that has run 60-foot times in the 1.30s. Formally powered by a 434-inch small-block on nitrous, the new combination is a 5.3L LS built by Mike Haller with a Brian Tooley cam and valvetrain. The ring gaps were opened up to “something that probably won’t work,” according to Mike. Aspiration is a single Garrett GT4202 turbocharger. The engine runs on E85, mitigating the need for an intercooler. The transmission is a TH400 built by Seneff Transmission in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the rear axle is a Ford 9-inch with 4.10 gears. Mike hopes for 9s (to start) at Bandimere’s wicked 5,880-foot elevation.

1999 Mustang
The Mustang is Miles’ budget-built race car. After the factory 4.6L bit the dust, it was time to rethink things. Miles initially wanted to stay Ford, but after scoring a 5.3L LS engine and TH400 transmission for $1,100, the swap was a no-brainer. The engine received a full rebuild, fitted with a Stage 4 camshaft from Brian Tooley, and topped with a mild (for now) 150hp nitrous plate system. Oddly enough, the mustang weighs about the same as the truck (3,200 pounds) and runs the same 295-series drag radials.

The first thing we thought of when we saw this is, Take our money now! Alas, you can’t buy one of these—Miles created his own swivel racing seat via some creative ingenuity and a seat out of a late-model, dirt-track car.

BurnTables CNC/Plasma Cutter
This CNC table/plasma cutter is a fairly stout version from BurnTables that cuts through steel, aluminum, or stainless steel like butter. Miles reports that he’s cut up to inch-thick steel plates before. We’re betting that wasn’t for a drag car.
