Dynamic Duo

Who: Rick Krueger

What: 1968 Ford Mustang

Where: Lyons, Kansas

Why: Rick’s Mustang is the product of an extensive ten year home restoration. We dig the 460 power, AED transmission, and fat Mickey Thompson tires out back. There is plenty of custom work, too, including one-piece glass in the doors, roll cage, and an S197 grille modified to fit the older car’s shape. Rick did all the work at home except for the transmission build and paint job. Parked next to his wife’s 2006 Mustang, it shows two of the most iconic Mustang shapes throughout the generations.

Pig Pen 55

Who: Gary Cook

What: 1955 Chevy

Where: Salem, Missouri

Why: We had to read the his sentence twice- Gary says he bought this car in the ‘80s for $25 out of a hog lot. We’re not sure what’s more surprising, the price or that it was stored in a pig pen! Either way, it goes to show that you can find a deal anywhere. Gary fixed the car up and had it on the road in 2015. The engine is a 383 backed by a TH200 4R transmission. We love the vibe and dare say he made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Model Love
Reading “Funny Car Folk Art” in the March 2018 issue of Car Craft has inspired me to try cutting up model kits, like I did as a kid. I only wish I has read this before I started cutting up my ’63 Chevy II. I could have practiced first. Thanks Steve! His love for all things automotive, no matter the scale, comes through loud and clear in his writing.

Labs and GMT400’s

Here’s a pic of Bullitt, me, and our truck, fresh from the spray booth. It’s a 1990 Chevy sport with a TBI 350 and five-speed manual transmission. I bought it new in1990. It still has the original short block, clutch, and transmission, but I added Edelbrock heads, Comp Cams’ XE249 cam, a Bell Tech 2/4 drop, and Eagle 17” wheels. I love C/K pickups! They make great dual-purpose hot rods!

Burnout!!

I bought This 1988 Mercury Cougar XR7 from a local guy for $300, because it needed a transmission. I swapped in a T5 5 speed from a Mustang and pedals out of an 1984 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. It has a 3.73 posi 8.8 rearend, turbo coupe hood, and a 1991 Mustang top end and High Output cam in the factory 5.0. I want to give thanks to coolcats.net for providing the information to build something other than a fox body mustang.

Blown-Up Part of the Month

OOHHH!! That had to hurt. This is the broken piston from the 5.3 engine in Hot Rod Garage’s Bonemaro- their ratty 2nd Gen Camaro project car. The turbocharged 5.3 went into detonation and took out the piston and cylinder wall, so they gave the whole thing to us!
