For those that tow their show or race cars the Ford F-Series Super Duty with Power Stroke diesel has been the go to hauler for decades. While these Super Duty trucks can pull mountains UP mountains, they’re not known for their fuel economy. Ford fans have been asking for a fuel efficient diesel offering in the smaller, lighter, F-150 truck for a while now and Ford will now offer just such a truck in the 2018 model year.
The new 2018 F-150 Power Stroke diesel features a best-in-class 11,400 pounds of towing capacity along with 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. Add to that the best-in-class diesel 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque and you can see that the new F-150 Power Stroke diesel is going to be another win for Ford. Of course the estimated 30 mpg doesn’t hurt either!
“For every truck owner who wants strong fuel economy while they tow and haul, we offer a new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V-6 engine that dreams are made of,” said Dave Filipe, vice president global powertrain engineering. “The more you tow and the longer you haul, the more you’ll appreciate its class-leading towing and payload capacity and how efficient it is at the pump.”
The F-150 Power Stroke diesel shares quite a bit with its big sister Super Duty 6.7L Power Stroke, including a lot of engine technology and the very same Ford powertrain team. Additionally, the new 3.0L V-6 uses the compacted graphite iron block and forged steel crank from the 2.7L EcoBoost for added strength and durability with peak torque at just 1,750 rpm. The variable-geometry turbo is used for greater responsiveness and a common-rail fuel injection system with 29,000 psi injection enables quiet operation.
Engineers made sure the new F-150 Power Stroke diesel could handle the demand, using the same aluminum body and fully boxed high-strength steel frame with new, stronger axles and a mechanical engine-driven fan with dual radiator shutters.
“We know that competing diesels with electric cooling fans have to dial back on power under extreme heat and altitude, so we decided on a viscous-controlled mechanical fan that has the capacity to move much more air across the radiator and intercooler in extreme conditions,” said David Ives, Ford diesel engine technical specialist. “This gives F-150 Power Stroke owners more power and more passing capability in harsh conditions.”
Ford’s new 10-speed automatic is standard and features a Power Stroke diesel specific calibration while Ford’s Auto Start-Stop is standard. The 2018 F-150 Power Stroke diesel is available in both 2WD and 4WD platforms and is available with Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum SuperCrew models with either 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot beds, as well as the SuperCab with a 6.5-foot bed.
