Hot 2017 Super Chevy Show and Track Action from National Trail Raceway

For over 30 years, the Original Super Chevy Show has been feeding the appetites of Chevy fans across the country. The annual event in Hebron, Ohio, at National Trail Raceway is one of the most popular. The main event was Saturday, but Friday was busy at the dragstrip as cars got dialed in for the battle to come. At a Super Chevy Show any GM-powered car or truck can compete, which means you never know what you’ll see in the pits. Yep, LS- and Chevy-powered Mopars, Mustangs, and even the occasional AMX are intermixed with the GM rides, which adds a nice variety. Besides, putting a Chevy engine in a Ford is the easiest way to make it actually fast.

There was a ton of drag classes for drivers to compete in and a pretty good chunk of prize money up for grabs. Of course, the hard part was working through the ladders and landing in the number one spot. Hey, if it was easy everyone would do it!

In addition to the drag racing action there was a large National Parts Depot-sponsored car show, swap meet, and vendor midway to check out. There were also exhibition cars for the hundreds of spectators that showed up to catch the action. On the car show side there were row after row of cars fit to drool over. Stock and restored? Yep, there were some of the nicest ones around on display. Customs? Hell yeah, Pro Street, Pro Touring, gassers, there was a little bit of everything spread around the paddock. No wonder this is one of our favorite events of the show season.

The track was busy on Friday with test-and-tune cars, but on Saturday it was packed as Chevy-powered racers finished getting dialed in and started fighting their way through the various brackets.
As is typical with any car show, the NPD-sponsored show had a heavy contingent of Camaros in attendance.
Judging took place all day with car show participants hoping to take home a trophy or maybe one of the coveted Super Chevy jackets. Here, Jack Minor’s stunning Hugger Orange ’69 Camaro gets looked over by one of the Super Chevy judges.
There were quite a few newer Camaros on hand as well, including this fairly rare drop-top Indy 500 edition.
We love us some gassers and this show didn’t disappoint. Seeing them out on the track was just icing on the cake!

On the stock side of the ledger we really dug Rob Griffith’s red and white ’55 Bel Air convertible.
On the wilder side, far wilder, was Denny Terzich’s insane ’57 Bel Air. If you want to see more of this Pro Street bruiser then you’re in luck since there’s a full feature in this very issue.
A super clean engine bay is just something we love checking out and they don’t get much cleaner than the LS-filled goodness of James Boitnott’s ’56 Nomad wagon. If you want to see more then find a July 2017 issue of Super Chevy or dig around on superchevy.com.
At almost all Super Chevy Shows there’s a swap meet and the one at Hebron was chock full of hard-to-find Chevy bits at sometimes bargain prices.
The track was busy all day and late into the evening as drivers tried to win their way into the prize money that was up for grabs.
Phil Brown’s ’71 Nova was a great mix of classic looks and custom touches.
One of our favorite cars at the show was Jim Warner’s Pro Touring ’66 Chevy II. Forgeline wheels, Wilwood brakes and, shockingly, a Gen-1 small-block instead of the nearly mandatory LS engine made this car a real standout.

The drag racing is always cool since we get to see rides that don’t get a lot of love on the car show side, like this sweet late second-gen Camaro. Any car can run at a Super Chevy Show so long it passes tech and is GM powered.
We love wagons and they don’t get much bigger than this ’73 “Clam Shell” Impala. This factory 454 big-block Chevy was highly optioned with power windows, power seats, A/C, cruise control, and an 8-track tape player. It was super clean and being sold for $11,000. Trust us, we were pretty tempted to drive it home.
Chevrolet Performance was on hand showing off a C7 Corvette Z06 along with a new ZL1 1LE Camaro and a slew of their crate engines. But what really got our attention was this second-gen fitted with a Connect & Cruise LT4 engine.
At every Super Chevy Show, National Parts Depot picks their favorite restored Chevy from the show. At Hebron it was the 1967 Chevelle owned by Joe Smith. Look for a full feature on this stunning Chevy in a future issue.
