Wheel rubbing, tire rubbing, interference, steering rack, clips, travel limiters

The lowered stance and wider rubber on your Mustang looks great…but the rubbing and scraping when making tight turns is a buzz kill. Besides being annoying, rubbing tires and wheels on suspension or body parts is damaging and dangerous. Sure, you can train yourself not to turn the wheel so sharply, but did you know there’s a way to actually prevent the wheels from rubbing at full lock?

Latemodel Restoration offers steering rack limiters, which clip onto the outer ends of the steering rack. When installed, they prevent the steering rack from moving so far that they shove the wheels into suspension or body parts. No more wincing when turning into a parking spot!

If you hear a scraping sound when you turn, it’s your Mustang telling you it needs these.

This lowered 1995 GT wears a set of 2003 Cobra wheels and 275/40-17 tires. At full steering lock, they rubbed heavily on the front sway bar.
Clearly, Ford knows where tires can rub on the control arms. Not only did this control arm “rub plate” show evidence of tire contact, but the wheels were grinding on the edge of the plate.
Latemodel Restoration offers a six-pack of these steering rack travel limiters. They only take a few minutes to install.
After removing the inner tie rod dust boot, we clipped a travel limiter onto the outer end of the steering rack. (Note that this aftermarket rack already had a thin one installed [green]). It only took one limiter on each side to cure our wheel and tire rubbing issues.
