2018 Piston Powered Auto-Rama: Hot Rod Action In The Basement

There is a big flashing sign above the east exit doors at the Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama with a giant arrow and the words “More Cars Downstairs.”

That sign keeps participants from missing one of the most fun areas of the event. Everybody calls it The Basement, and it’s the meeting spot and display area for owner-built (mostly) cars and trucks. The variety of cars is similar to that on the main floor (no boats, tanks, or airplanes downstairs however) and includes early rods, customs, Fifties and Sixties cruisers, muscle cars, racecars, and a few surprises.

The space in the basement is smaller and the atmosphere is laid back—like if you threw a party for several hundred of your closest friends and told them to bring their cars.

The folks throwing this subterranean party are the approximately 40 members of the Northern Ohio Car Club Association, which started in 1990 and has been been working with the Piston Powered Auto-Rama to organize and host the action in the basement for several years. For many of the participants, who come from as far away as Ontario, Canada, the downstairs is where it’s at. Check out our galery of every car in the basement.
