It’s impossible to write a book review without having a copy of the book in hand, but all outward indications are former Motor Trend Classic editor, Matt Stone did a bang-up job of writing Isky: Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding.
Such a good job that Isky: Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding was awarded 2018 best book of the year by the Motor Press Guild, plus earned Stone the Dean Batchelor Award for Excellence in Automotive Journalism. Since I don’t have a copy of Isky: Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding I’m going to take an educated shot in the dark, and guess the book starts out in the early days. My dad and Ed Iskenderian were both born in 1921 and grew up in Los Angeles. My dad was a hot rodder too, and told me about how he, Ed Iskenderian, Vic Edelbrock Sr. and bunch of other guys used to race on Venice Blvd. in Model T Fords they’d buy for10-$15 and strip down, and hop-up. If they weren’t racing on Venice the venue would the dry lakes up on Southern California’s high desert.
Muroc is the best-known dry lakes bed, and the early days of lakebed racing was as wild and crazy as racing on the streets of L.A. It was the hopping-up engines that produced guys like, Edelbrock, Hillborn, Weiand, Carillo, and of course Ed Iskenderian. Well, this is as far as I can go from memory I’m going have to follow this link and buy a copy of Isky: Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding.
