Hot rods and rock ’n’ roll have been going together since they were both young. Axle Idzardi has been doing his share to keep them together, especially when it comes to traditional rods and customs and roots-oriented rock and R&B. In a couple weeks, Axle will be hosting the Suede Palace at the Grand National Roadster Show for the 12th year in a row.

On the first full weekend of the new year, Axle, along with the Throttle Kings Car Club and Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, hosted the Rhythm Collision Weekend #4 Music Festival and Car Show at the Marriott in Riverside, California. The three-day event commenced on Friday with a number of well-known surf, doo-wap, and rockabilly-style bands. We dropped in during the day on Saturday when the music was provided by a DJ and the Crown City Bombers.

The car show portion of the Rhythm Collision is open to pre-1966 traditionally styled rods, customs, cruisers, bikes, and pickups. A number of companies also contributed to the fun, including PPG, which sponsored an award. Axle told us that his purpose in organizing the Rhythm Collision is to highlight the cars and music that he and many other enthusiasts love. When the event started in Riverside in 2014, it was held at a park. The next year, it moved downtown to the Marriott and has been there since.

The Throttle Kings have been involved with the Rhythm Collision since the beginning. The club has been around for 10 years, and has eight current members. It’s a small club intentionally, with an emphasis on commitment to traditional cars, family, and each other. “We look forward to growing old together,” several members expressed.

This year’s Rhythm Collision was dedicated to the memory of William Wisslead, who died unexpectedly on January 2 at the age of 68. “Wild Bill,” as he was better known, was a Riverside resident and well regarded in the Southern California hot rodding community as a talented pinstriper.

The Grand National Roadster Show is coming up fast and STREET RODDER will have coverage of the cars and music from the Suede Palace as part of our extensive overall coverage. The Rhythm Collision Weekend helped us endure the wait with a blast of roots rock and rods.
