Since the first Grand National Roadster Show in 1950 this event has been know by a number of names. Often referred to as the Oakland Roadster Show due to its Northern California location that was never official. Today the GNRS is held at the Pomona Fairplex and is titled the O’Reilly Auto Parts Grand National Roadster Show presented by Meguiar’s Custom Car Products, but to many this will always be know as the Grand Daddy of car shows.
In addition to all the individual buildings stuffed with the best cars and trucks in the country, Street Rodder and Classic Trucks Magazine sponsored the 12th Grand Daddy Drive In on Saturday January 28 and Sunday the 29th. A show within a show, or more precisely a show outside a show, participants are allowed to drive onto the grounds and display their cars between the buildings, receive entry to the show and discounted admission to the Wally Parks Motorsports museum. All things considered its a win/win situation for everyone as those attending the Drive In get the best parking spots available those attending the show get to see even more cars and trucks as they go from building to building.
As in years past Classic Trucks presented an award each day of the Big Daddy Drive In. Saturday we picked Bob Sandstrom’s blue ’56 Chevy pickup.
