If You Had To Pick One: Comparing Cars

Dodge Polara or Opel GT? Let’s compare.

Drag Racing: The Opel ran a rather weak 17 once. The Polara ran back-to-back 14.6 runs straight off the highway after a 500-mile road trip. Winner: Polara.

Entertainment System: You can just about hear the FM radio in the Opel over the clatter of the straight-four at 4,000 rpm. The Dodge has an AM radio that doesn’t work and couldn’t hear over the blown-out mufflers if it did. Winner: Opel.

Cargo: The Dodge trunk can just fit a stack of 8-foot 2x4s. The Opel is about the size of an 8-foot 2×4. Winner: Polara.

Socializing: The Polara can host a party inside, with seating for six. The Opel has room for one passenger, if you don’t mind touching that passenger’s knee every time you shift to Third. This might seem like a win for the Dodge, but in the Opel, you don’t get lunch-driver duty very often. Winner: Opel, depending on the knee.

Grocery Getter: You don’t have enough money to overfill the Polara with groceries. The Opel saves cash and calories since you can only take home a few leaves of kale. Winner: Opel.

Coolness Factor: Who likes which? I get a lot of compliments on the Polara from homeless people for some reason. The people most excited about the Opel seem to be Germans. Gonna call this one a tie.

Burnouts: Big-block Dodge, ladies and gentlemen! The Opel will do a cute chirp to Second, but Polara wins this one all the two-smoking-tires way.

Parking: You’d expect the Opel to claim this, but sometimes I can’t find it in parking lots because it’s been hidden by something bigger, like a Mazda Miata. You can spot the green machine from space. Winner: Polara.

Fuel Economy: Every few months, I put gas in the GT. Every few minutes, I put gas in the Polara. Winner: Opel.

I could go on, but it’s pretty obvious you need both an Opel and a Polara.

Each a finely honed tool for the job.
