Bradenton, FL- Dave Steele, who paved a legendary path in open wheel racing, was killed Saturday night in an accident at Desoto Speedway. Steele, 42, was competing in the Southern Shootout Sprint Car Series at the 3/8-mile asphalt oval.
According to reports the accident occurred while Steele was lapping slower traffic. The track released the following statement:
“Desoto Speedway owners and staff are saddened by tonight’s passing of David Steele in the Sprint car feature. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends who were all in attendance, to see him try to win his 100th Florida race.”
Steele compiled many successful seasons racing open wheel in the USAC Sprint, Midget, and Silver Crown ranks. He was the Silver Crown Champion in 2004 and 2005 as well as a two-time winner of the Turkey Night Grand Prix (2001, 2003). Steele also competed in the ARCA Racing Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series, and Indy Racing League.
