The event may have been dubbed “The Thaw” on Saturday afternoon at Golden Sands Speedway (just outside Plover, Wisconsin), but Mike Lichtfeld undoubtedly put his fellow competitors on ice. Lichtfeld led wire-to-wire in the 100-lap event.
At the drop of the green Lichtfeld outgunned pole-sitter Jerry Brickner, then survived several late cautions that included challenges from standout racer Casey Johnson, an upstart Derek Kraus, and former track Champion Jeremy Lepak. It was Lichtfeld’s first Super Late Model win away from his home track Dells Raceway Park.
The event was the first under the new ownership of former Golden Sands Super Late Model racer Cody Smiley, and attracted a stout field as well as an eager fan base. Just over 30 Super Late Models were on hand to support the inaugural event. Sportsman, Pure Stocks, and Four Cylinders competed as the support divisions.
Scott Luck survived an incredible end to the Sportsman feature , Karl Gennett won the Pure Stocks, and Tim Hintz bested the field of Four Cylinders.
