Peer Pressure at HOT ROD Drag Week

When all of your friends do something, eventually you’ll want to try and do the same thing too. That is the exact situation Shawn Brumley found himself with Gear Vendors HOT ROD Drag Week, powered by Dodge. He has sat and watched his buddies John Dodson, Jason Doisher, James Karger, Chris Mosley and Scott Brown have fun on Drag Week for the past several year, and he wanted in on the action too!

Setting off for Hebron, Ohio, Shawn took Frank Garvin, a good friend who helped put the car together. Shawn runs a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro. Under the hood is an iron block 408ci LS, ported LS3 square ports heads followed by a 4L80E that sends power to a Quick Performance fabricated 9-inch diff. The car was built by Anything Automotive, Jason Doisher and John Dodson’s shop down in Texas.

In the lanes waiting to make a hit.

Knowing he wasn’t going to be competitive in his class, Street Race Small Block Power Adder, he decided to slow the car down and take out the big pills. Swapping out the 300 jets for a 150 jet, he sprayed the 408ci Camaro to a best NHRA-legal pass of 10.07 at US131 Raceway. But after officially finishing the hell week, he let turned the wick up and ran a 9.74 at Hebron on the Friday.

Trailer in tow, another late night drive.

During Drag Week a friend and fellow racer, James Karger, had some suspension trouble with the car. They stopped in a town called Dundee, Ohio to help. While stopped to fix the car it appeared the entire town came to help James get going again. During this excitement a woman living across from where they stopped wanted to see some smoke, and Shawn graciously fulfilled her wishes.

For 2017 Shawn is having Anything Automotive go through the car once again. This time they are installing a Huron twin-turbo kit featuring twin Precision 67mm turbos so they he can keep the AC in the car, an RPM Level 6 4l80E transmission for low cruising at RPM on the long drives. The suspension was already beefed up with BMR Tubular control arms and Viking double adjustable shocks on all four corners.

Shawn is hoping to make a big splash in 2017 and the new build of the car should have no trouble leaving its mark. Shawn is hoping for consistent mid-high 8 second passes, with air conditioning. Aiming for a mid 8 sec average over the 5 days the build of the car is being handled by proven performers and shouldn’t be out of reach for Shawn. This “catfish” Camaro will be one to watch on DW2017!
