Qualifying Night Two for the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire belonged to some California Dreamers. Travis Berryhill bested them all with his first Qualifying Night win, clinching his first appearance in the Saturday main event.
Berryhill took the lead from Andrew Felker on lap four, but would surrender the lead to Kevin Bayer on lap 10. After regaining the lead on lap 13, Berryhill did not look back. Behind him, fellow California drivers Jake Swanson and Colby Copeland rounded out the podium. Swanson and Copeland will join Berryhill in Saturday’s main along with Tuesday’s Top Three – Tyler Courtney, Larry Wright, and Zach Daum.
“I’ve been in a B-Main here but I’ve never been in a Saturday night A-Main, so I’m pretty proud of that,” Berryhill said. “I’ve been in the ‘B’ and been close, and down to the Q main event, or whatever they are down to these days, and everywhere in between. So when you are down there in those things it’s a struggle and it’s stressful because you never know what you are going to get; especially the further you get down. I’ve been all the way through them. Last year we had a pretty poor qualifying night. We were fast but we just couldn’t put it all together. Then Saturday night we really bared down and threw some stuff at it that worked and we went through three or four main events last year. I carried a little bit of that confidence over to this year as well.”
Former Chili Bowl Nationals Champion Sammy Swindell posted a solid Seventh Place after starting 24th. He finished one spot ahead of 2016 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Champion Donny Schatz. Those drivers will have another chance Saturday to race their way into the A Main.
