Some very unique and sought-after trophies have been on the line over the past two weeks at Volusia Speedway Park. The golden gator replicas again were the top prize dangling in front the DIRTcar Late Models and UMP Modifieds on Tuesday night.
Brandon Sheppard – who has taken very little time getting acclimated to his new team for 2017 – put forth a strong performance behind the wheel of the Rocket Chassis #1 on his way to the A Main win. Sheppard wrestled the lead away from Brian Shirley just before the midway point of the 30-lap feature event. He then had to escape a hard-charging Shane Clanton.
The UMP Modifieds saw three different winners on the night as the field was broken into three feature events. The “Triple 15s” split the field into three mains based on points accumulated throughout the last eight days. JE Stalder was victorious in the first 15, Jonathan Taylor in the next, and Jacob Hawkins in the final. Hawkins’ victory nearly secured him an overall 2017 DIRTcar UMP Modified Championship. However, with his run to Second Place and a solid stretch of races, Nick Hoffman secured the title by one point.
Aside from the racing action, Tuesday’s program also featured practice sessions for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds. The Big Block Mods will compete with along with the DIRTcar Late Models on Wednesday and the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series Thursday through Saturday.
